Cara was at her wit’s end, wanting Kevin so terribly that the tension caused her a sleepless night. Sensibly, she knew she and Kevin were doomed as a couple, so making love to him could only hurt her. Her rational side understood that. But her heart and her body were a different matter. She wanted to have sex with her husband—was that so wrong? She had asked that of herself last night and then again this morning. She craved Kevin. He knew how to make her skin prickle and how to satisfy her innermost desires. But the sad fact remained that, once she got what she wanted, their marriage would be over.
When her cell phone rang, Cara looked at the number and hesitated before answering. “Hi, Kevin.”
“You cured me last night.”
“I’m…glad.”
“How about letting me make it up to you. Dinner, tomorrow night? I promise to be better company. I’ll even shave.”
Cara laughed. She rubbed the slight beard-burns on her face where his stubble had bruised her last night. Memories rushed forth. She shook her head and knew she should make up an excuse and refuse him.
It’s for the best, Cara.
Cara opened her mouth to say no, and surprised herself. “I’d love to.”
She slammed her eyes shut. Why did she find Kevin so irresistible? Had he changed? Could she trust him? None of it mattered, anyway. In less than a week she’d be gone, with her signed divorce papers in hand.
After making arrangements with him, she hung up the phone, at odds with herself. When her cell phone rang a second time, she answered it quickly, happy to receive Alicia’s call.
“Hi, Cara. It’s Alicia.”
“Alicia, I’m so glad you called.”
“Are we still on for lunch and shopping this afternoon?”
“I’m looking forward to it.” Cara needed a girl’s day out to clear her mind.
“I’m in town, so I’ll pick you up and we’ll head to Somerset. Can you be ready in half an hour?”
“Yes.” So ready, she thought. “I’ll be waiting for you downstairs.”
After she hung up the phone, Cara dressed in brown slacks and a sleeveless crème top. She slipped her feet into comfy, chocolate-brown Jimmy Choos and pulled her curly hair back into a tortoiseshell clip. She grabbed her matching handbag and exited the hotel room.
Alicia drove up just as Cara exited the Four Seasons. The doorman wished her a good day and off she went, ready to put Kevin out of her mind for the next few hours.
Cara took in the sights as the bustling downtown soon gave way to quiet residential roads. Somerset, in the heart of Maverick County, was a small, beautifully constructed town northeast of Houston. Cara had once loved living there in a modest home with Kevin. There were times in Dallas when she would be reminded of their house—she’d see a fabric similar in design to her kitchen curtains or smell fresh mint and recall the stone pathway that led to their front door, laden with the herb. She would sigh, wondering how her life had changed so much.
